Coenzyme Q10 (ubiquinone) is a type of benzoquinone that acts as a coenzyme. This compound is functionally similar to a vitamin and is contained in most human cells, except for red blood cells and eye lens cells that do not contain mitochondria. 

Coenzyme Q10 has two basic functions:

• assists in transformations in the electron transport chain (respiratory chain) on the mitochondrial membrane,
• serves as an antioxidant in mitochondria and lipid membranes (protects these structures from free radicals).

Effect: contributes significantly to energy from food (form of ATP). Most Q10 contains the heart, lungs and liver (the organs with the highest energy requirements).

Coenzyme Q10 is in part synthesized in the body and in part is ingested through food. The proportion of self-synthesis decreases with age. 

Therapeutic indications

1. Cardiovascular diseases

• a.) Heart failure: Q10 has a direct stabilizing effect, it is able to reduce the size of atherosclerotic plaques in the aorta.
• b.) Myocardial infarction: In patients after acute myocardial infarction supplemented with Q10, there was a reduction in angina, total arrhythmias and left ventricular dysfunction, a significant reduction in total heart attacks. Coenzyme Q10 helps minimize ischemic heart damage. After a surviving infarction, coenzyme Q10 helps to better manage rehabilitation and return to normal life.

2. Antioxidant effect on lipids and plasma lipoproteins

• a. Q10 inhibits the peroxidation of lipids in the cell membrane and lipoproteins in the circulation, which is crucial in the process of developing atherosclerosis.
• b. Q10 reacts directly with peroxide radicals, effectively reducing alpha-tocopheroxyl radicals, thus eliminating prooxidative radicals and regenerating the active form of vitamin E.

3. Statins

• Patients treated with statins have been shown to have reduced coenzyme Q10 levels during examinations.

4. Neurological diseases

• Positive results have been published in Parkinson's disease. High doses of Q10 (1200 mg daily) reduced CNS dysfunction by up to 44%.

5. Infertility in men

• There is a significant correlation between Q10 and seminal sperm count, between the ubiquinone ratio and the percentage of abnormal sperm.

6. Leather
