Throat lozenges protect the mucous membranes of the mouth and throat. They are used to eliminate symptoms, such as hoarseness, itching and burning in the throat and dry mucous membranes, which lead to sore throats or an unproductive, dry cough.
The causes of dry and irritated mucous membranes of the mouth and throat are various and may include:
- excessive voice overload,
- difficulty breathing through the nose (eg due to rhinitis),
- dry air caused by heating or air conditioning,
- pollen allergy (hay fever),
- smoking.
